4 years of my life, gone. A little bit about myself firstly, I'm a fan of animation and after graduating from high school(which did not offer formal animation classes), I decided to go into Nanyang Technological University(NTU) to study animation. Big mistake. Sure I did manage to learn some things relating to animation, but because of how it was structured, there wasn't enough technical training since one has to take other classes that are totally irrelevant in order to fulfil the required number of academic units. I'm not going to complain though since it's always down to your own hard work in order to excel in whatever field you want to pursue. It definitely makes sense that there's not much hand-holding since it's university. But at the same time, you'll still learn enough, but they really don't prepare you well for the industry since they don't have much practical training.
However, I think there weren't many opportunities in the first place since Singapore's industry is still growing. The only big names would be LucasFilm and maybe TinyIsland. Other than that, one shouldn't really expect much from NTU. It's better in other academic things rather than the arts. As I always say to my friends, some will benefit and some will not. In the end, if you do want to study animation in Singapore, forget the "big" names like NTU, it's just a waste of time. It's better to go to 3Dsense or even overseas if you have the chance. I have friends who dropped out after a year, realising that it wasn't helping them at all and I sometimes regret not dropping out. BUt what's done is done. Some people need guidance and some can get away with self-learning, I'm the type who needs guidance. Even the emails that I receive from the school are just generic emails catered to the mass student body, nothing to do whatsoever with the art side unless you count some talks about design. But nonetheless, at least you'll have a degree once you graduate. Since I felt that it didn't help me much, I have decided to give Vancouver Film School a shot.
